According to a recent survey from Manpower Inc., U.S. employers are
less optimistic about future hiring plans than a year ago but more
optimistic than their overseas counterparts. In fact, two-thirds of
U.S. employers plan no changes in hiring in the first three months of
2009, up from 60 percent surveyed this time last year and 59 percent
surveyed last quarter. Manpower polled about 71,000 private and public employers in
32 countries and Hong Kong in October and compared outlooks for the
first quarter of 2009 with those in the second quarter of 2008 and as
well as a year ago; 31,800 U.S. employers participated in the survey.
Out of the 33 countries and territories surveyed, 25 reported their
hiring forecasts for the coming three months declined. In 21 countries,
companies reported their weakest hiring plans since the country's
participation in the survey. Singapore, Spain, Ireland, and Italy were
the least optimistic about hiring.
