More workers in Nampa, Idaho will soon be saying cheese. Lactalis American Group, one of the state's largest cheese producers, plans to increase mozzarella production from 7 to 31 million pounds a year.

A company spokesman said production expansion will add about 70 jobs and increase the company's purchase of local and regional dairy products. "Lactalis has always been committed to buying milk supplies from local and regional dairy farmers," he said. "Approximately 85 percent of its dairy products come from local suppliers." The plant currently employs 600 in East Canyon County. The increase is needed to meet a growing global demand for mozzarella.

Plant expansion will begin March and be completed in 10 months. Local construction contractor Hansen-Rice will oversee the expansion Lactalis expects production at the expanded fresh mozzarella facility will begin spring of 2013.

Over the years Lactalis has shown commitment to the Nampa, Idaho area which included;

• Construction of a $6.5 million, state-of-the-art, wastewater treatment plant that set the standard for phosphorus removal in Idaho.


• Adopting renewable energy strategies which includes utilizing over 90% hydropower to run its Nampa plant.


• Using clean-burning natural gas fuel boilers in vats, cookers and for heating cleaning water.

The Nampa facility has been producing cheese for over 10 years and is the largest Groupe Lactalis production plant in North America.

Lactalis produces cheese under the President, Galbani, Sorrento, Precious and Rondele labels.
