5D Robotics, Inc., a robotics software company that integrates human behaviors with leading robotics hardware, moved into its 14,500 square foot office on 2236 Rutherford Road in San Diego, California, to expand its operations.

The new space will serve as the 5D Robotics headquarters, and includes executive offices as well as a bay for robotic research and development. The company will continue to rent a large outdoor space for robotic testing and demonstrations as needed.

The company said it has continued to thrive despite the country's slow economic recovery and the federal budget sequestration. "The 5D vision of integrating robotic hardware and software to create real, reactive human behaviors is exciting to the robotics community, the defense sector and private industry," said David Rowe, 5D Robotics CEO. "We continue to provide soldiers with robotic teammates that can carry their gear and find hazards, now we are expanding into commercial applications and we needed larger offices and testing areas in order to do that. We are currently working with partners and customers on products for warehouse/distribution, lodging and hospitality and mining."

5D is best known for its proprietary Behavior Engine software that makes it easier for humans to interact with robots in a variety of environments. 5D BE software includes safety behaviors such as obstacle avoidance and follow-me capabilities and its behaviors can be easily customized to new environments since it relies on tags instead of GPS for navigation. 5D BE software uses a novel UWB tracking system that allows the robot to follow a human or another tagged vehicle while avoiding collisions with other objects.
