Area Development
Caterpillar Inc. - a manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, natural gas engines, and industrial gas turbines - will invest $200 million to increase manufacturing capacity in India. The Illinois-headquartered company will increase production at its off-highway trucks facility near Chennai and at its engine production facility in Hosur. "Caterpillar machines and engines are being used by our customers in India to drive sustainable development and to support economic growth in the areas of infrastructure development, commercial and residential construction, mining, power generation, and energy production" says Chair and CEO Jim Owens. The company and its subcontractors currently employ 4,500 in India and plan to "significantly increase" employment in the country as a result of this expansion.
