In an effort to boost the use of renewable energy sources, the government of Spain has approved legislation that allows wind parks to be set up along the country's 2,500-mile coastline.

Offshore wind parks take advantage of strong, steady coastal breezes. However, critics fear they will blot the landscape and harm the nation's fishing industry. Consequently, any offshore wind projects need clearance from the government's environmental ministry.

Spain plans to triple the amount of energy derived from renewable sources by 2020. Currently, it is one of the EU's largest producers of wind power, along with Germany and Denmark.
