General Motors (GM) will support its production of its Volt electric vehicle by opening a lithium-ion battery pack manufacturing facility at its technical center in Warren, Michigan. Company CEO Rick Wagoner says that the 31,000-square-foot facility will create up to 100 new jobs at full production in 2010. "The design, development, and production of advanced batteries must be a core competency for GM, and we've been rapidly building our capability and resources to support this direction," says Wagoner. GM will initially purchase the Volt's batteries from Compact Power Inc., a Michigan-based subsidiary of South Korea's LG Chem Ltd.; the Associated Press reports that LG Chem will add an unspecified number of jobs at its Troy, Michigan, location.
