BB&T Corp said it will lease a 390,000 square foot administrative and back-office operations center near Piedmont Triad International Airport in a Greensboro, North Carolina, in a building that was formerly an American Express call center, adding an estimated 1,700 jobs.

The 1,700 new BB&T jobs will be created over the next five years, and will primarily be back office, administrative and support jobs. The company, which signed a 7-year sublease, said the new BB&T Triad Corporate Center in Greensboro will eventually house up to 2,500 employees. The bank will start the center with 50 to 100 employees by year's end.

"BB&T continues to grow organically," said Chris Henson, BB&T COO. "The new BB&T Triad Corporate Center allows us to consolidate offices, many of which are nearing capacity, in a central location and provide space for future expansion. The central location of this facility to Winston-Salem, Greensboro and High Point make it an excellent site for our existing and future associates and underscores our commitment to the Triad," added Henson.

Mayor Robbie Perkins said it was a good day not just for Greensboro, but for the entire Piedmont Triad. Information on the size of the bank's investment was not immediately available. Economic development officials said the firm did not ask for incentives.
