Area Development
Samsung Networks America, a U.S. unit of South Korea-based electronics giant Samsung Group, will invest approximately $20 million to locate its North American customer care center in Mauldin, South Carolina, according to a Greenville County economic development official. Jerry Howard of the Greenville Area Development Corporation says the company will initially hire 300 workers, mostly customer care representatives, and add up to 700 more jobs over the next five years if business conditions are favorable. Samsung executives have not commented publicly on the project, but Howard says state and local officials have been meeting privately with the company for months under the codename Project Teal. The call center will occupy an 80,000-square-foot building currently under construction that is scheduled to be occupant-ready in May. The Greenville News reports that the state will provide the company with a $650,000 grant to pay for infrastructure, along with tax credits contingent on job creation.
