Beverage maker Dr. Pepper Snapple Group Inc. will invest $120 million
to open a bottling plant and distribution facility in Victorville,
California, that will create 200 new jobs, according to city officials.
The Los Angeles Times reports that the company has purchased 53
acres in the Southern California Logistics Airport, a former Air Force
base that is being turned into a freight transportation hub. The Dr.
Pepper plant, which is scheduled to open in the spring of 2010, will
consist of 550,000 square feet of warehouse space and a
300,000-square-foot factory with up to six manufacturing lines. Along
with Dr. Pepper and Snapple soft drinks, the company also produces 7UP,
A&W root beer, Sunkist orange soda, and Hawaiian Punch. Victorville
city officials say the plant will be the company's largest hub west of
Texas and will serve nearly 20 percent of the U.S. population. To
accommodate the new factory, the city says it will construct an
industrial wastewater treatment facility to process the approximately
550,000 gallons of wastewater per day that the bottling plant will
discharge; city officials hope that the new wastewater facility will
attract other food and beverage manufacturers to the area.
