Bayer MaterialScience is set to invest some U.S. $120 million into its Baytown, Texas, site. Baytown, is the company's largest manufacturing facility in the United States and is a keystone of Bayer MaterialScience's global manufacturing strategy according to a press release by the company.

The planned U.S. $120 million investment is designed to improve the reliability of the infrastructure throughout the site.

The investments signal a commitment to Baytown by Bayer MaterialScience and are intended to help support anticipated regional growth. The press release did not mention how many additional jobs (if any) are projected to be created.

Ironically, any creation of jobs could lead to challenges for Bayer Material Science as the company already has trouble finding skilled workers for its Baytown facility. In a May 6 article posted on WSJ.com, Gregory Babe, chief executive of Bayer AG's U.S. business, remarked that the skill shortage "is a real issue, and it's going to get much worse."

The article goes on to mention that Bayer has had particular trouble filling positions at its plastics plant in Baytown, Texas.

Bayer, this summer, will for the first time hire interns to learn how to operate machinery at the Baytown plant in the hopes of ultimately recruiting capable workers for full-time employment.
