Don Hugo Produce Investing $100M in Edinburg, Texas, Food Distribution Center

01/21/2011
Don Hugo Produce, a Chicago-based importer and wholesaler of Mexican produce, frozen products, and avocados, is planning a more than 227,000-square-foot warehouse in Edinburg, Texas, to import and distribute Mexican produce, The Monitor reports. The project will create 200 jobs, eventually growing to 800, and represents a $100 million investment.

"It's my feeling that this is the time to go," said company President Jose L. González. "You're going to see more people bringing produce into Texas."

Located on a strategic site off U.S. Highway 281, the facility will provide shippers with clear access to northern destinations. The warehouse is expected to open in December, and is the biggest of nine facilities the company is planning over the next five years.

The company's investment in developing a produce park could create up to 1 million square feet of cold storage.
