Coffee Roasting Company to Bring 800 New Jobs and $180 Million Investment to VA

10/28/2011
Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. has announced it will open a roasting, grinding and packaging facility in Isle of Wight County, VA. The $180 million project will create 800 jobs over the next five years.

In the next few months the company will begin customizing a 330,000-sq.-ft. building it recently acquired and begin hiring in February, according to news reports.

Green Mountain produces over 100 types of coffees in single-portion packets (K-Cup packs). They are designed for use in Keurig single-cup brewing systems, made by another of the firm's divisions.

Gov. Bob McDonnell has committed to giving the company $4 million over five years from the Governor's Opportunity Fund, a discretionary incentive fund. Discussions about local incentives have not been made public. But according to Lisa Perry, the county's economic development director, Green Mountain is eligible for local enterprise zone incentives the governor would need to approve.

"This is one of the biggest employment announcements in 10 years in Virginia," said Perry. "And for every direct job created with this type of manufacturing, two or three indirect jobs are created."

Earlier this month Green Mountain announced it will expand four existing roasting and production facilities in Vermont and create 400 new jobs in that state. The company also has U.S. production sites in Massachusetts, California, Tennessee, Washington and Canada.
