Census: South Leads Fastest-Growing Metros

03/27/2008
Eight of the 10 fastest-growing U.S. metropolitan areas are in the South, according to new figures from the U.S. Census Bureau. For the period of July 2006 to July 2007, the Palm Coast area of Florida tops the list, with a 7.2 percent population growth, followed by St. George, Utah; Raleigh-Cary, North Carolina; Gainesville, Georgia; Austin-Round Rock, Texas; Myrtle Beach-Conway-North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Charlotte-Gastonia-Concord, North Carolina/South Carolina; New Orleans-Metairie-Kenner, Louisiana; Grand Junction, Colorado; and Clarksville, Tennessee. Among the top 50, 27 metros are in the South, with 20 in the West. Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Springfield, Missouri, are the only two in the top 50 to be located entirely in the Midwest. None of the top 50 are in the East - that region's fastest-growing metro is York, Pennsylvania, which ranks 107th.
