U.S. Steel Investing $450M in Alabama

04/21/2008
United States Steel Corporation (U.S. Steel) will build a steel facility in Epes, Alabama, along the Tennessee-Tombigbee River in the state's economically depressed Black Belt region. The $450 million project will produce a carbon alloy material known as Cokonyx, with plans to produce 250,000 tons of the material per year at full production. More than 75 full-time and 250 temporary construction jobs are expected when construction begins, with 235 total full-time positions planned on completion of the project, which is expected approximately 18 months after the permitting process is finished. State officials say that permitting may take as long as a year or even 18 months.
