Medtronics Selects Texas Site for Expansion; 1,400 Jobs Planned
Area Development Online News Desk (05/12/2009)
Medtronic, Inc., a global leader in medical technology products and services, will locate its new Diabetes Therapy Management and Education Center in San Antonio, Texas. The company says in a statement that it expects to create 1,400 professional jobs over the next five years at the center, which will be located in 150,000 square feet of the Overlook at the Rim office complex. "We are excited to add the city of San Antonio to the Medtronic family, and look forward to becoming an active member of the growing biomedical community in South Texas," says Chris O'Connell, president of the diabetes business and senior vice president at Minnesota-based Medtronic. "Medtronic offers exciting and fulfilling career opportunities helping people with chronic diseases live healthier, more productive lives." Medtronic expects to begin the hiring process for the new positions immediately and plans to open the new facility in late summer. The company has been offered more than $14 million in financial incentives from state and local governments, including a $6 million grant from the state, and calls the incentives package "an important factor" in the decision to locate the diabetes center in Texas. Medtronic officials say more than 900 locations across all 50 states were evaluated by the company before San Antonio was chosen.
