April Job Losses Fewer Than Predicted

05/02/2008
Employers in the United States cut 20,000 jobs in April, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Labor. The number is far lower than the 75,000 that industry analysts had predicted, and also lower than the two previous months, which had drops of 81,000 and 83,000, respectively. The report indicates that the construction sector shed 61,000 jobs and manufacturing lost 46,000, but that those losses were offset by gains of 37,000 in healthcare and 27,000 in professional and technical services. At the same time, the national unemployment rate fell 0.1 percent to 5.0 percent, a slightly better showing than the prediction of a 5.2 percent jobless rate.
