Canon Investing $600M, Adding 1,000+ Jobs in Virginia

05/02/2008
Business technology giant Canon will expand its U.S. operations in Virginia with new facilities and jobs, planning an investment of more than $600 million. As part of what it terms the "Vision for the Future" program, Canon Virginia - a subsidiary of Canon U.S.A. - will construct a new 700,000-square-foot facility in Newport News for the manufacturing of cartridges for laser printers, and will expand and refurbish existing facilities for the manufacturing of digital consumer products. In addition, the company plans to create a research and development center in Newport News for development of robotic manufacturing technologies. An expansion project at its Gloucester County recycling subsidiary is also planned. The program is expected to create more than 1,000 new jobs at the different facilities. State and local incentives for the program total more than $20 million, including job creation grants, funds for transportation improvements, and job training assistance.
