Rolls-Royce Opens Virginia Plant

05/02/2011
Rolls-Royce has officially opened a new advanced manufacturing and research facility in Prince George County, Virginia. According to the aircraft engine maker, discs manufactured at the facility are one of the most critical engine components. Rolls-Royce is calibrating its high-tech machinery before beginning production of the jet-engine discs. They will be part of engines designed for airline jets such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A380.

The 180,000-square-foot plant is the first facility to be built on the company's 1,000-acre Crosspointe manufacturing and research campus. Rolls-Royce has invested $170 million in the facility, which currently has 41 employees but will ultimately employ 130 workers when it is fully operational. Roll-Royce expects to eventually invest $500 million in the Crosspointe site, generating 500 jobs.

The facility was designed with sustainability in mind, with skylights that help reduce its consumption of electricity and the capture of rainwater in an underground cistern, which will be used to flush toilets and irrigate the landscaped grounds. The British company's North American headquarters is in Reston, Virignia.
