Clearwater Paper Invests Up To $280M in Shelby, North Carolina Facility

06/10/2010
Clearwater Paper has selected Shelby, North Carolina for a new tissue machine and converting facility. The site will include a through-air-dried (TAD) paper machine and seven converting lines able to produce ultra grades of private label tissue.

"The Shelby facility will increase our ultra and premium offerings to our existing Southern and East Coast customers," said Bob DeVleming, vice president of the consumer products division. "We believe it will also create new opportunities to expand our private label consumer tissue business to other retail grocery chains in the region, and we are very pleased with the initial work by North Carolina officials. We are ready to get started."

Clearwater plans to begin construction by the third quarter of this year. The company will invest $260 million to $280 million in the project, with state and local incentives providing $50 million of funding. The first line of production will begin in 2011 and the second in 2012. At full productivity, the facility will produce approximately 10 million cases or 70,000 tons of bathroom tissue and towels each year.
