Food Processor Expanding, Investing $270M in Colorado

06/16/2008
Leprino Foods, a producer of cheese and whey products, will invest $270 million to build a new cheese and whey production facility in Greeley, Colorado. The 847,000-square-foot plant will produce cheese for commercial pizza manufacturers and whey for several different types of food products. The Greeley Tribune reports that the investment will be divided between $143 million for the building of the plant and $122 million for new equipment; the actual cost of the existing site was $5 million. The plant will create up to 260 new jobs, with potential for 500 positions when the later phases of construction are completed. Company officials cited the potential for dairy farm growth in the area as a key factor in choosing the location; the facility is expected to use up to 7 million pounds of milk per day. According to the Tribune, incentives offered to Leprino Foods include a reduced rate for water from the city's water bank, the creation of a special financing district around the plant, and development of infrastructure in the area. The plant is scheduled for completion in 2012.
