Microsoft Considers West Des Moines, Iowa for Data Center

06/17/2010
A Microsoft spokesperson tells the Des Moines Register that the company is building a data center in Iowa.

"Microsoft can confirm that we are building a data center in Iowa, but have no further comments at this time," said Monica Drake, the spokesperson.

Microsoft told the state last week that it was considering purchasing a $100 million data center in West Des Moines. The company is also considering sites in San Antonio and Chicago.

West Des Moines leaders and economic developers are waiting for more definitive statements from Microsoft. West Des Moines Mayor Steve Gaer said they have not been notified that the city has been selected. Last year, Microsoft gave up construction of a $600 million data center in the city due to the recession.

The city and state are currently working on a variety of incentives to lure the company to West Des Moines. It has already received $3.4 million from the state for transportation improvements surrounding the site.
