GE Aviation, U. of Southern Mississippi Partner for Research Project

06/29/2009
GE Aviation, a division of General Electric, and the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) will collaborate on a research project to develop technology and advanced materials for use in a next-generation aircraft engine. A statement from the university says that 15 to 20 faculty and student researchers from its School of Polymers and HIgh Performance Materials will join experts from GE Aviation in a one-year project to develop composite materials for the GEnx engine, which the company says will be the world's only jet engine with composite fan blades, fan platforms, and fan case; it will be used in Boeing 787 and 747-8 airliners. "GE's relationship with Mississippi leaders and the state's university system has been outstanding," says David Joyce, president and CEO of Ohio-headquartered GE Aviation. "Simply put, we are teaming on unique technologis that ultimately impact future air travel." Martha Saunders, USM's president, says, "As a comprehensive research institution, Southern Miss is committed to creating a culture that supports an innovative academic environment while being able to promote economic development for our state and region." The project will be supported by a $2.4 million grant from the state.
