Sierra Pacific Industries to Revamp Sonora, California Mill

06/30/2010
Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI) will create 130 when it revamps its sawmill in Sonora, California. The company will update an older mill that it closed in 2009.When the renovated mill reopens in May 2011, it will be able to produce lumber from a greater range of log sizes.

"We are investing in the future of this community," said SPI Area Manager Ryan Land. "Lumber markets have improved modestly and by increasing the range of acceptable log sizes we will be able to bring family-wage jobs back to this area. SPI continues to invest in its forests and mills to grow more trees and enhance productivity while protecting the environment and creating jobs."

SPI shut the Sonora mill last year due to a soft lumber market, increased state regulation, and reduced timber harvests. It had laid off 130 workers because of the closure.
