Washington Plant Turns Tires to Fuel

06/06/2007

The South-Central Washington city of Moxee is slated to become the location of a production facility that will convert shredded tires to biodiesel.

Organic Energy Conservation Company LLC (OECC) uses a commercial distillation system that vaporizes rubber at high temperatures, then converts the vapor into oil and combustible gas. Bill Rose, OECC managing member, says the benefits of the process are two-fold, helping to reduce the country's dependence on fossil fuels and disposing the glut of recycled tires. U.S. drivers generate 299 million waste tires annually, according to the company, and 42.2 million wind up in landfills.
