Report: Volkswagen Will Build New Plant in Alabama

07/14/2008
The German auto industry publication Automobilwoche is reporting that automaker Volkswagen has made the decision to build its new U.S. facility in Huntsville, Alabama. Citing sources with direct contact to members of the company's supervisory board, the publication says that Volkswagen's CEO and head of production will make their final recommendations to the board today. Earlier, the company had narrowed its choices to Alabama, Tennessee, and Michigan. The German publication also reports that Chattanooga, Tennessee, will be the company's second choice. Automobile magazine is reporting that Alabama's incentives package is stronger than that of the other states in the running, and Automotive News claims that Alabama is able to meet Volkswagen's construction deadline, while Tennessee cannot guarantee it. The company's board is expected to announce its decision tomorrow.
