Cargill Begins Building Green Manufacturing Plant in Illinois

07/09/2008
Agricultural conglomerate Cargill has broken ground on a new $22 million manufacturing facility in Chicago that will produce a soybean-based "polyol" material to replace petroleum products in polyurethane. The ingredient will be used for such materials as flexible foam in furniture, bedding, and automotive products. The Minnesota-based company says the 40,000-square-foot plant will be the "first world-scale biobased polyols plant ever built" and that for every 1 million pounds of soy poloyls that replace petroleum-based polyols, more than 2,000 barrels of crude oil are saved. Cargill expects the new plant to be operational by November of this year and will initially hire 12 new employees for the project.
