South Korea Building 10 More Nuke Plants

Government officials in South Korea say the nation plans to build 10 additional nuclear power plants over the next 22 years and increase its renewable energy resources as part of a US$100 billion plan to reduce the nation's dependence on fossil fuels. Agence France-Presse reports that South Korea's National Energy Committee (NEC) is calling for an increase from 2.4 percent today to 11 percent by 2030 in the amount of energy the nation receives from renewable sources. The plan would save the country $34.4 billion in energy import expenses and help create 950,000 new jobs there. South Korea uses nuclear power to generate nearly one-third of its power needs and plans to increase that amount to 60 percent with the new plants.
