Kentucky, Indiana Competing for Electric Car Plant

08/06/2008
ZAP, a manufacturer of electric and rechargeable vehicles, is in discussions with economic development officials from Kentucky and Indiana about building a manufacturing facility in one of those states, according to the Kentucky governor's office. As part of the effort to woo the company, Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has signed an executive order allowing the California-based company's vehicles on state roadways; they are already street-legal in Indiana. Steve Schneider, ZAP's CEO, is quoted in numerous media sources as saying the rising cost of logistics - particularly to ship vehicles from California to the East Coast - makes a Midwest manufacturing location attractive. The company already has a manufacturing facility in China. ZAP officers have not announced a prospective date for their decision, but the Beshear says state officials will be working with ZAP in the coming days.
