Plastikon Industries Creating 126 Jobs in Lawrence, Kansas

10/22/2010
Plastikon Industries has selected Lawrence, Kansas, for a new bioscience plastics facility that will produce plastic vials used in global healthcare labs, the Lawrence Journal-World reports. The company will create 126 jobs in the next three years. Most of these will be new, local hires.

"This is a great win for us," Beth Johnson, vice president of economic development for the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, told the Journal-World. "The jobs are going to be great."

Economic developers are now waiting to see if the project will spur growth of a bioscience cluster in the area. Kaveh Soofer, vice president of Plastikon, attributed the company's selection of Lawrence to the area's "highly skilled biotech and pharmaceutical employment base." The company also considered Chicago and South Carolina for the facility.

Plastikon will not seek tax abatements, but is requesting $60,000 from the city and county for work force training over the next five years. The company has also requested $7 million of industrial revenue bonds from the city for the project.

Plastikon has headquarters outside San Francisco, California.
