GM Temporarily Closing Michigan Plant

03/17/2009
General Motors (GM) will close its assembly plant in Orion Township, Michigan, for three weeks beginning later this month. The Detroit News reports on its website that the plant, which employs 3,200 workers, will close on March 30 and stay shut until April 20 due to a lack of demand for the vehicles produced there, the Chevrolet Malibu and the Pontiac G6. GM spokesperson Chris Lee tells the News that workers can apply for state unemployment compensation and will receive supplemental pay from the company. Sales for the Malibu were down 23 percent last month, while G6 sales fell nearly 66 percent.
