Smucker’s New Facility Will Shutter 4 Factories, Spur 700 layoffs

03/25/2010
The J.M. Smucker Company will shutter four operations sites, and cut 700 jobs, as it embarks on building a new plant in Orrville, Ohio to replace its current 60-year-old facility.

The new manufacturing site, to be started in the summer of 2012 and completed in three years, will handle most of the company's production, according to an Industry Week report.

The 40 percent workforce reduction will take place over the building time period.

According to Industry Week the move is a cost efficiency action to streamline the supply chain and will save the company $60 million.

The plant closings will take place in Memphis, Tenn., St. Marie, Quebec, Sherman, Texas and Kansas City, Mo.
