Greater Syracuse: Biotech Business Success Thrives in Central New York
Biotech Location Guide 2007
Our skilled and available work force, affordable cost of operation, diverse economic incentive programs - such as the NYS Empire Zone and Federal Empowerment Zone - and less-burdensome regulatory climate all contribute to successful business growth.
Our diverse economy is a key to our success. From the specialty steel manufacturing of Crucible Steel to the medical device manufacturing of Welch Allyn, and from Bristol Meyers Squibb Biopharma research to Bank of New York financial security services, the community has adapted and been a catalyst for growth. To quote a recent USA Today article, "Syracuse has long adapted to economic change. It went from salt manufacturing to being the typewriter capital to the city where TVs were made." Our people innovate, adapt, and succeed.
Innovative Growth Initiatives
The Center of Excellence is on the leading edge in "green" and renewable energy. It is a collaboration of industry, academia, government, and business, with a mission to create innovations in environmental and energy technologies that improve human health and productivity, security, and sustainability in urban and built environments.
The Central New York Biotechnology Research Center - a project that will establish the Syracuse area as a leading center for plant and animal biotechnology research - is an aggressive three-phase plan that envisions an $80 million, 240,000-square-foot facility containing research labs, technology-transfer space, offices, and conference rooms dedicated to biotechnology research and economic development efforts.
Keys to Success
Successful companies will find it easy to get the type of inexpensive real estate they need in Syracuse including the 250-acre Clay Business Park. Located in a suburban section of Onondaga County, the Clay Business Park features the seclusion of a rural setting with easy access to housing, shopping, downtown, and the airport only minutes away.
Success demands a good transportation infrastructure. Sitting at the crossroads of two interstate highways, Syracuse companies can reach the major population centers of the Northeast United States and Southeast Canada in one day, while the Syracuse Hancock International Airport offers over 150 daily flights to East Coast locations with one-stop global connections.
Success also demands a great quality of life. Nestled in rolling hills and picturesque scenery of forests and lakes, Syracuse is the perfect place to raise a family. Syracuse offers a variety of quality housing choices, from an upscale condominium in the heart of downtown or a traditional tract home to a country haven tucked in the woods, a historic estate, or waterfront property - we have it all, at much less than national average.
World-renowned healthcare services, 35 colleges and universities, top cultural and recreation events, and four seasons of fun all contribute to the outstanding quality of life experience in Central New York.
