Power to the People
There are great ideas blowing around northwest Missouri – and real people capitalizing on them. A growing wind industry in this part of the state generates enough energy to power an entire town – and it does. Rockport, Missouri has the distinction of being the first US city to operate solely on wind energy.
But there are other kinds of power in the region. Missouri’s Northwest operates three of the state’s ten biodiesel plants, with plans for more in the future.
International corporations bring a lot of muscle to the region’s manufacturing sector. A skilled and reliable workforce produces high quality lawn mower and jet-ski engines for Kawasaki. Case New Holland distributes agricultural and industrial machinery from its Cameron logistics center.

Triumph Foods brought innovative food-processing to the area, employing more than 2,300 at its “whole hog” operation in St. Joseph, making it one of the largest employers in the 18-county region. Triumph brought a patented genetic process to the industry for consistent quality of all its products. This research is an example of the region’s signignificant contribution to Missouri’s burgeoning animal science corridor.

The Pony Express got its start in St. Joseph. Today things move slightly faster. US 36, US 65, I-29 and I-35 are highspeed connectors to the nation’s markets. And, instead of in saddle bags, data now flows at the speed of light on optic fiber. This modern communication technology allows enduring towns like St. Joseph, Chillicothe, Maryville and Trenton to thrive in today’s economy. All four have been revitalized through Missouri’s DREAM initiative.
