Carolina Composites LLC, the South Carolina-based manufacturer of Pioneer Boats, has canceled a planned move to Georgia and will remain in South Carolina. The Post and Courier newspaper of Charleston reports that the company will invest $5 million to relocate its manufacturing operations from its current site in Harleyville to Walterboro, adding more than 100 jobs in the process. The new facility will be located in an existing 122,000-square-foot distribution center that has been vacant for more than three years. Carolina Composites had announced in the spring of 2007 that it would relocate to Georgia, but the Post and Courier quotes local economic development officials in South Carolina as saying the change came about due to the company's loyalty to the Lowcountry location and its existing 40-person work force, most of whom will be able to commute to the new South Carolina location.
