Cummins Inc., a high horse-power engine maker, will invest nearly $220 million to expand its Seymour, Indiana, manufacturing complex, with plans to add an estimated 290 jobs in the next few years.

"The high-horsepower business is a growing part of Cummins and because of the demand for these products throughout the world we are able to add new high-skilled engineering and manufacturing jobs here in our home region," said Cummins Chairman and CEO Tom Linebarger.

The Columbus-based company, unveiled a new 8 feet high,14 feet long, 4,000-horsepower high-speed diesel engine last year, designed to power locomotives, boats, mining trucks and offshore oil and gas platforms.

Cummins said it expects to start hiring new engineering and support workers this year and to fill the additional jobs by 2015.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation said Cummins is eligible to receive up to $250,000 in job development and training grants. In addition, the Indiana Department of Transportation will also assist in funding of infrastructure improvements and the firm requested city tax abatements.
