Sanyo North America Corporation, a subsidiary of Japan-based electronics giant Sanyo Electric Company Ltd., will invest $80 million to construct a solar cell factory in Salem, Oregon. Company officials say the plant, planned at approximately 860,000 square feet, will produce silicon ingot and solar wafers, which are used in the production of solar panels. At least 200 jobs are expected at the new facility, which is expected to reach full operations in April 2010. The Oregonian newspaper reports that incentives offered to the company could reach $40 million in tax credits over a two-year period, as well as discounted land costs, road improvements worth at least $1 million, worker training and equipment grants, and a five-year exemption on property taxes.
