General Motors Corporation (GM) will cut 2,000 jobs at plants in Michigan and Ohio in response to continuing weak demand for its vehicles. According to multiple news reports, approximately 1,200 workers will be laid off and one shift will be eliminated at GM's Delta Township, Michigan, factory, which produces the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia, and Saturn Outlook. About 800 workers will be laid off and a shift eliminated at the Lordstown, Ohio, plant, which produces the Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5. In addition, GM will expand temporary weeklong production shutdowns at plants in Delaware, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas in the United States and Oshawa, Ontario, in Canada; those plants, which are seeing previously announced stoppages of three or four weeks throughout the first quarter, will each shut down for at least one additional week.
