Johnson Matthey Inc., a specialty chemicals company based in the United Kingdom, will build a $43 million manufacturing plant in Smithfield, Pennsylvania. According to the Pennsylvania governor's office, the 118,000-square-foot facility will produce selective catalytic reduction catalysts that reduce emissions of nitrogen oxide from heavy-duty diesel vehicle exhaust. The company plans to open the new plant at the end of 2009, creating 110 new jobs at an average salary of $16 per hour. Along with the new facility, Johnson Matthey has agreed to retain 627 jobs at its Wayne, Pennsylvania, facility. The governor's office also reports that the company has received more than $7 million in financial incentives, including loans, grants, and training funds. Johnson Matthey has operations in more than 30 countries and employs 7,800 worldwide.
