General Atomics, a provider of research and development and manufacturing in energy and defense services, will form a partnership with Eastern Kentucky University to research the potential for cellulose-driven biofuel production in the state. The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that the Eastern Kentucky University Center for Renewable and Alternative Fuel Technology (CRAFT) will seek to determine which types of non-food plant materials - including wood, tobacco, corn stalks, or switchgrass - can be most efficiently converted to biodiesel. General Atomics will then invest in a production plant somewhere in Clark County, Kentucky, with an investment of what company officials say could be in the tens of millions of dollars. The research project has received $4 million in federal funding, and the governor will recommend additional state and local funding of approximately $650,000.
