Meijer Distribution Inc., the distribution
arm of retail giant Meijer, will invest $27 million to expand its
operations in Newport, Michigan, according to the Michigan governor's
office. The company plans to create 190 new jobs; news website
MLive.com reports that the salaries for the positions will average $462
per week. The 250,000-square-foot expansion will double capacity and
allow Meijer to supply an additional 56 stores from the Newport
facility, which currently ships meat, produce, dry grocery products,
and frozen foods to 45 stores. Michigan successfully competed for the
investment with Indiana, where Meijer has another distribution facility
in Middlebury; other facilities are located in Grand Rapids, Michigan,
and Tipp City, Ohio. The company has been offered incentives that
include a state tax credit valued at approximately $1.6 million over 12
years and a $35,000 grant for training expenses.
