Area Development
Siemens Drive Technologies and its partner, Winergy Drive Systems Corp., have opened a second plant in Elgin, Illinois. Wind turbine drive gears manufactured at the partners' existing Elgin plant will be assembled and tested at the new $20 million facility, which will employ 300 production workers and about 55 in new office jobs.
The plant was built using recycled steel and designed with energy-efficient lighting, heating, and cooling systems. The state of Illinois and city of Elgin provided a number of incentives to secure the investment, including a Wind Energy Development Grant and job training funds.
