Area Development
Dow Chemical is hiring 100 workers at a Midland, Michigan, plant that will develop solar shingles, the Detroit News reports. The Midland-based company has received federal funds and state tax credits to build Dow Powerhouse solar shingles, which are designed for residential applications.

"There's a tremendous amount of activity in green tech at Dow," said company spokesperson Bob Plishka. "It's definitely a significant area of focus for the company as we achieve our growth goals."

The U.S. Department of Energy contributed $20 million in funding towards the project, and the state provided $140 million in tax credits. The project will create more than 1,200 jobs in the area by 2014.
