Area Development
Rolling on the River
The Cape Girardeau region is on a roll. Perry County, in the northern section of the area, adds lots of industrial diversity. Toyoda Gosei (with roots in Toyota's production system) employs 1,200 making steering wheels, interior trim, and exterior body molding for American-made Toyotas.
Gilster-Mary Lee, a private label food processor, employs 1,200 at its five area plants making baking mixes, cereal and popcorn. Meanwhile, at Perryville's Municipal Airport, highly skilled mechanics maintain modern jet aircraft for Saberliner.

The region consists of Perry, Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, and Scott Counties and has over 140,000 residents. Its diverse economy is based on education, medical services, retail services, transportation equipment manufacturing, and food processing.

The Southeast Missouri Port Authority is the northernmost, ice-free port on the Mississippi. This lock-free port ships a million tons a year of bulk commodities, coil steel, lumber and heavy equipment. The Port is upgrading its own short line railroad which connects to both the Union Pacific and Burlington-Northern/Santa Fe. Multi-modal sites are available across the region with rail, barge and highway access.

Southeast Missouri State University has been located in Cape Girardeau since 1871. With over 10,000 current students, the University is expanding its outreach with the creation of the Southeast Missouri State Technology Village, a 400 acre site, split by I-55. The Technology Village will be a mixed-use development, envisioned to include not only a business, technology and research park, but also related and supportive uses and services.
