Defense Contractor SAIC Relocating Headquarters to Virginia, Creating 1,200 Jobs

10/01/2009
Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), a defense contractor specializing in engineering and technology applications, will invest $25 million to relocate its corporate headquarters to its facility in McLean, Virginia, from its current location in San Diego, California, according to the Virginia governor's office. The Associated Press (AP) reports that company is making the move because company CEO Ken Dahlberg has reached the company's mandatory retirement age of 65, and new CEO Walt Havenstein has ties to the northern Virginia area. With the move, SAIC plans to expand its presence in McLean and hire up to 1,200 new employees over the next three years; AP says only a few dozen of the California location's 1,400 employees will be affected by the move and that location will remain in operation. "Virginia's favorable business environment, highly skilled work force, and attractive quality of life combine to make this an ideal location for our corporate headquarters," says Havenstein. "We commend Governor Kaine and his team across the state for creating an environment that is very supportive of business." AP reports that the state and county will provide SAIC with a $3 million grant up front and that the company will be eligible for an additional $7 million from the state when the expansion is complete.
