Dow Corning, Hemlock Investing $3B in Michigan and Tennessee Plastics Plants

12/16/2008
Dow Corning and Hemlock Semiconductor Corporation will jointly invest up to $3 billion to expand facilities in Michigan and Tennessee that produce polysilicon, a material used to manufacture solar cells and semiconductor devices. According to a company statement, an initial investment of $1.2 billion will be used to build a new site in Clarksville, Tennessee, while an additional $1 billion will expand Hemlock's current site in Hemlock, Michigan. "The exact scale of this investment will be determined by market conditions," says Rick Doornbos, president and CEO of Hemlock Semiconductor. "Making this investment in today's volatile economic climate is a testament to both the long-term outlook of the solar industry, as well as Hemlock Semiconductor's ability to add capacity to meet the needs of customers." The Michigan expansion is expected to add up to 300 permanent new jobs and 800 construction jobs. The new facility in Tennessee is expected to employ between 500 and 800 permanent workers with 1,000 construction jobs over the next five to seven years.
