Toyota Delaying Mississippi Prius Plant

12/16/2008
Toyota Motor Corporation will delay the start of production at its plant in Blue Springs, Mississippi, according to the Associated Press. The company says construction on the plant, which was scheduled to begin production of the Prius hybrid automobile in 2010, is about 90 percent complete and will be finished, but installation of factory equipment and machinery is being postponed indefinitely. In November, Toyota reported a 34 percent decline in U.S. sales. AP reports that approximately 100 people who have been hired to oversee construction and human resources plans at the plant will be reassigned within the company. According to the Business Courier of Cincinnati, construction on the $1.3 billion plant began in 2007 with plans to build the Highlander SUV; however, Toyota earlier this year announced that it would use the facility for the Prius instead.
