British-Based Makin Metal Powders Plans U.S. Manufacturing Plant in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania
The new, 75,000-square-foot facility will be in the Clearfield County Business Park in Lawrence Township. Makin Metal Powders plans to invest nearly $9 million into the project, which is expected to create at least 39 manufacturing jobs over the next three years.
According to state officials, Makin Metal Powders evaluated several states for the potential new location, but ultimately decided to locate into Pennsylvania due to the strength of its manufacturing sector and workforce as well as its prime location.
“We are very excited to be expanding our operations into the US because many customers throughout the Americas have been urging us to take this step so that we can further build on our already excellent reputation for service and value, and support them from a ‘local’ base,” said Jonathan Hood, Managing Director at Makin Metal Powders. “When searching for the right location we were blessed with a choice of several very fine options, but the inward investment teams in Clearfield and Pennsylvania impressed us with their blend of knowledge, professionalism and friendliness. This, coupled with a great plot right in the heart of the US powder metallurgy industry, meant the choice was second to none. We look forward to joining and contributing to the local community and to serving our customers on the US side of the pond.”
As an incentive, Makin Metal Powders received a funding proposal from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development for a $25,150 grant for workforce training.
The company was also encouraged to apply for a $7.25 million low-interest loan through the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority.
Initial contact was made through DCED’s Office of International Business Development, which worked with the company, coordinated several site visits to Pennsylvania, and connected Makin Metal Powders to the Governor’s Action Team.
“Pennsylvania has a rich history of manufacturing that continues to grow stronger every day,” Governor Tom Wolf said. “Makin Metal Powders’ decision to open their first U.S. manufacturing operation right here in the commonwealth shows that the international community recognizes the strength of our manufacturing sector as well. This decision is great news for Clearfield County and for Pennsylvania manufacturing.”
