Compass Group USA's Expansion Project Expected to Create 200 Jobs in Charlotte, NC

06/20/2011
Compass Group USA, Inc., a hospitality and support services firm, has announced it will move some of its corporate jobs from several regional headquarter operations to Charlotte, NC. The $8.5 million project is expected to create 200 jobs over the next four years in Mecklenburg County. The overall average for the new positions will be $52,500 a year (not including benefits). Compass Group USA and its subsidiaries provide dining and support services to corporate clients, educational and healthcare facilities, and sports and entertainment venues in the U.S. States and Canada. A wholly owned subsidiary of Compass Group PLC, the company employs more than 428,000 people worldwide and has over 1,000 employees working in its Charlotte headquarters (located in the Coliseum Center).

The NC Economic Investment Committee awarded a Job Development Investment Grant to Compass. This means the firm is now eligible to receive a grant equal to 55 percent of the state personal income withholding taxes derived from the creation of new jobs for each of the eight years in which its operations meet annual performance targets. If Compass Group USA meets the targets identified in the agreement, it could mean $1.7 million in maximum benefits for the company. In addition, the NC Department of Commerce, NC Community Colleges and the Charlotte Chamber provided assistance in some capacity to make the project a reality.

"Compass Group PLC is the 17th-largest employer in the world," said Gov. Bev Perdue. "The fact that international corporations, which clearly have a choice as to where they do business, continue to bring these kinds of projects to North Carolina proves that our investment in education and job training is paying off."
