U.S. Leads Global Wind Growth

06/08/2007

The use of wind power to generate energy is continuing to expand, both in the United States and throughout the rest of the world. According to a report from the U.S. Department of Energy, the United States had the fastest-growing global wind power capacity in 2006, installing 2,454 megawatts, or 16 percent of the worldwide market. Germany, India, Spain, and China followed in second through fifth place, respectively.

The Global Wind Energy Council predicts that the worldwide demand for wind power will grow by 19 percent per year through the end of the decade. The group's report cites "unexpectedly strong growth" in China and continued U.S. demand as factors for the increase, estimating that the cumulative capacity worldwide will reach 149.5 gigawatts by 2010, more than double the capacity installed at the end of 2006.
