Fortune Global 500 List: Fewer U.S. Firms, More from China, India

07/10/2008
A total of 153 companies based in the United States have been included on the most recent Fortune Global 500 list. At the same time, 29 companies based in China are on the list, along with seven from India and five each from Mexico and Russia. "The list shows the fewest U.S. businesses in more than a decade and confirms the rising prominence of the emerging markets," says Jenny Mero, a Fortune reporter. "Less than 10 years ago, India, Mexico, and Russia posted only one company on the Global 500." The current top 10 companies are Wal-Mart (U.S., $378 billion in revenues), ExxonMobil (U.S., $372 billion), Royal Dutch Shell (the Netherlands, $355 billion), BP (United Kingdom, $291 billion), Toyota Motor Corp. (Japan, $230 billion), Chevron (U.S., $210 billion), ING Group (the Netherlands, $201 billion), Total (France, $187 billion), General Motors (U.S., $182 billion), and ConocoPhillips (U.S., $178 billion). The top Chinese firm on the list is 16th-ranked Sinopec ($159 billion); 116th-ranked Indian Oil ($57 billion) is India's top company. U.S. companies that fell off the list include Bear Stearns, Nike, and the Gap.
